Shape Houses and Being a Good Friend

Yesterday we made shape houses, we talked about how many people live in our house, and used our family stamps.  Today we read my favorite book about sharing… The Rainbow Fish.  We talked about things we can do to be a good friend, we found the letters in our name and put them in order, and we made our own Rainbow Fish.

Family and Friends

We read Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes.  In the book her classmates are not very nice and tease her because her name is so long and she is named after a flower.  Before she stated school she loved her name.  With the support of a wonderful mom and dad and a very special teacher, by the end of the book she once again loved her unique and special name!  We made friendship bracelets with cut up pieces of drinking straws as our beads.  We also made scrap paper art.  We squeezed a few other fine motor activities in by starting our morning with play dough and practiced writing our name at circle time.

Friends

We welcomed a new friend today and we are so happy to have you!  We also read a book called Bear’s New Friend.  We have been working on being a good friend, we do this all the time, but we have been talking more and making them more aware this week.  They are doing a great job using their words and not their hands.  Asking friends for toys and not just trying to grab it away.  Asking friends to play with them, and asking each other for help.  We really do have the best kiddos and that makes them awesome friends!  For our art project today we made a Friendship Mural.  They all worked together sharing art supplies and made a beautiful piece of art!

My Family and Friends

This week we are talking about our family and our friends.  I have sent home the first Family Homework Assignment… The main goal is to spend time together as a family and have fun!  No grades I promise :o)  Today we talked what makes a good friend, and we read a book called Friends.  During table time we sat with a friend and drew a picture of each other.  We also talked to our friends about some of our favorite things.

Feelings and Play Dough People

Today we read a book called The Way I Feel.  Each page tells about a different feeling;  Using the picture clues I had the children tell me how they thought the child was feeling.  They did a good job reading facial expressions!  We talked about our eye and hair color, and made a chart.  We also made people/faces out of play dough.

Staying Safe

Today we talked about how we can stay safe!  I had a parent request that we do a refresher on the subject and I don’t think you can talk about ways to stay safe with kids enough!  Tonight would be a good night to talk about this at home around the dinner table as well, since it will be fresh on their mind.  First of all let me say wow… we have such a smart group of kiddos!  At circle time I asked the children to tell me something you can do to stay safe and here are some of the answers we got.  “Look both ways before crossing the road” “Go downstairs if there is a tornado warning” “Watch out for cars” “Don’t go in big waves and wear a lifejacket” “Stay close to mom” “Put your seatbelt on and don’t hit a car or crash or hit people!” I asked them if they were lost what should they do?  They said find a police man, a security officer, or someone that works at the store.  Great answers I also told them if they couldn’t find one of those people that a mom or dad with kids is always a good choice they are usually very willing to help a lost child.  We also talked about staying in one place and not trying to find you, because you are already looking for them.  The best thing to do is stay where you are if it is a safe spot to stay.  We also talked about if there was an emergency what number should they call and most of them knew 9-1-1 and if your house is on fire get out!  I can tell this subject has been talked about a lot at home.  We also talked about our fingerprints and how no one else in the world has the same fingerprints.  We made our own fingerprints (and some hand prints) and then looked at them through a magnifying glass and compared our fingerprints to our friends.  We also celebrated a Birthday today!  Happy Birthday and thanks for sharing the yummy cupcakes!

Name Games

One of the first words your child will learn to read is their name, and soon their friend’s names also.  We use our names a lot at preschool!  We write it, we find it, we spell it, it is a very important word to know!  Today I made all of the children a laminated mat with their name on it and the letters of their name cut out so they could count them, put them in order, and later we will mix them all up and they will have to find their letters.  We already have some kiddos that can read their friend’s names!  This morning we had 7 kids that had 5 letters in their name and only 1 child that had 6 letters in their name.  We read I Like Myself and passed around a mirror and said what our favorite thing about our self is.  At the table we wrote our names and looked in a mirror and drew a self portrait.

Happy First Day of 2014-2015 School Year!

I am so excited to get the new school year started!  We are happy to have Miss Brittany back today, and Miss Vicki (mom/grandma) back tomorrow, but we will all miss “Big Emilea” as she heads back to High School tomorrow.  We will still see her though, she is never too far away!  This week we will spend our time getting to know each other.  Our theme for the week is All About Me.  Today we read Me I Am! It repeats itself a lot; by the end of the book the children were helping me read.  We practiced writing our names on a big piece of paper at circle time, and at table time we painted on “mirrors” (paper covered with foil).

Shaving Cream

We brought out the shaving cream today.  The children that were here last year and familiar with it jumped right in!  The new ones were a little more cautious.  It is a little strange, but such a great sensory experience.  They love smoothing it out on the table and then using their fingers to draw in it.  One of the more cautious children I offered a craft stick to explore with.  She was happy she didn’t actually have to touch it.  She also sat there the longest and we did a little coloring experimenting by adding red and blue water color to the shaving cream.  After a lot of mixing we finally ended up with purple!
