Polar Animals – Penguins

We looked up pictures of penguins on the internet.  Their favorite was the Macaroni Penguin!  After we looked at all the penguin pictures I gave all of the children a piece of black, white, yellow and orange construction paper.  We also put out the baskets of scissors, glue and a roll of sticker eyeballs and then let them create.  I think their penguin artwork is beautiful and one of my favorite projects from this week!  We also had a day full of play!

Polar Animals

We practiced our listening skills with a bean bag fast and slow passing game.  We did some of our favorite dancing songs Animal Action and Freeze Dance.  We practiced our scissors skills by cutting out a polar bear.  We then covered the polar bear with cotton balls!  We talked about what keeps animals warm and how they are able to swim in the frozen ocean… it is a layer of fat called blubber.  We then put our hand in ice water and counted how long we could keep it in there, it wasn’t very long!  We then covered our hand with a glove, covered it with Crisco, and covered it with a second glove and stuck our hand back in the water… it wasn’t cold at all! Our VIP shared her American Doll with us.  Thank You Miss Wendy for playing with us today!

Polar Animals

We read Five Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice.  We learned a new penguin song:

The Penguin Song
(sung to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”)
 I’m a little penguin
Black and white.
I waddle to the left
And I waddle to the right.
I cannot fly but I can swim
So I waddle to the water and jump right in!
We learned about Emperor Penguins and talked about how the daddy is the egg protector and his only job until the egg hatches is to keep it safe!  You can learn more about Emperor Penguins here http://www.penguins-world.com/emperor-penguin/  We then went to the motor room and pretended we were penguins and a balloon was our egg.  We had to waddle around and try not to let the balloon hit the ground!  We used our fingers to glide across foil with finger paint for table time.  Our VIP’s mommy joined us for Lunch and read us a story before nap time.  Thank you so much for joining us!!

Polar Animals

This week our theme is Polar Animals and our Letter of the week is Y.  We learned how to make Y in sign language… Y is one of my favorite letters to teach because you can shake your Y and it becomes yellow or add another Y with your other hand and shake them both and it becomes the sign for PLAY!!  One of my favorite words!  You can also add your pointer finger and it becomes I love you!  See if your child can teach you :o)

We read a book called Who Lives Here? Polar Animals, and then matched our polar animals to the pictures in the book.  I asked the children if they could think of something fun to do on ice and they said Ice Skating!  (That is what I was hoping they would say)  You would never believe how much fun you can have with a box of waxed paper and some carpet!  I highly recommend you try indoor ice skating at home!!  Our VIP shared her board and some of her favorite books with us!

Frozen

We wrote in our journals, found and circled the letter X, and practiced singing our ABC’s.  We colored snowy pictures and then painted over them with a magic paint that was supposed to make them look icy.  I have done this for many years, but this year it didn’t really work.  I usually use dark blue paper and used a more teal color, but I wouldn’t think that would make that much difference.  Maybe we will try a second layer to see if it works… The magic paint is just warm water with Epsom salt.  We also used our water color paints to paint on a block of ice!  I will be gone tomorrow Miss Wendy and Miss Vicki will be here!  Have a wonderful weekend!

Frozen

I knew how much the kiddos would love Frozen week, what surprises me is how much I am loving Frozen Week… their excitement is contagious!!  They are loving using their instruments to the Frozen Soundtrack I posted a video of them dancing and playing to “Let It Go”                                                                                                        https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=417259561782465&set=vb.189125444595879&type=2&theater

We did a very simple, yet always a well loved project, we made icicles!  Super easy and I don’t remember where the idea came from.  You squirt a thick line of glue on the top of your paper, hold it up, and watch the glue run down. When the icicles look the way you want them sprinkle them with white or iridescent glitter.  We also figured out how to get plastic jewels out of a block of ice; they used water and remembering what they learned from yesterday also asked for some salt!  Our VIP shared his board and shared 2 of his favorite toys!

Frozen

Frozen… the theme we have been waiting for!!  We danced and used our instruments to the Frozen Soundtrack, and we read An Amazing Snowman a story about Olaf.  We did frozen art by painting blocks of ice with watercolor paint, we then added some salt to see what would happen, some hot water, and to finish it off a few hammers!  They had so much fun exploring ice!  We also played with our Snow Sensory Table, and lots of time to play in the classroom and at the playground!

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, we talked about Martin Luther King, Jr.  We read a book called Martin Luther King, Jr. and we also read one of my favorite books about diversity called The Colors of Us by Karen Katz.  For table time we did the “my own two hands” water color painting from this site… http://preschool-daze.com/2011/01/18/m-is-for-martin-luther-king-jr-wrap-up/  We danced to our new frozen soundtrack, played a frozen memory game and a counting snowman game, and we made snow in our sensory table using insta snow. http://www.amazon.com/Be-Amazing-Insta-Snow-Makes-Gallons/dp/B000FA6APE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1421709831&sr=8-1&keywords=insta+snow
